Camera board • Re: Newbie alert! Help with Rpi5 and camera distance recording

Ok folks I was able to get some of my own answers on this by moving stuff all around to be able to have the RPi5 by the window. It does indeed detect motion with the script above. I managed to add part of the script from another example that shows how to add the timestamp to the video. That's working now. I also noticed the bottom number 2 at the end of the script listed above seems to control the video record time. So I changed it to 10 seconds and that seemed to record longer.

Problems:
Lots!
1. Minor shadows/leaves moving cause the camera to detect motion and record. Is there a better way of implementation motion detection? I know its comparing previous pixels with new ones, that's about all I can make of that script I don't understand it.
2. Quality - quality is rather low, I would prefer the highest quality, how would I modify the script above to do so? Disk space is not an issue!

3. Using PIR or Microwave sensor for motion detection to fire recording - I have read that a standard PIR sensor will not work/detect motion between glass, is this true? If so what would be an alternative sensor for detecting someone coming up to my door? I've seen some Microwave sensors on the market but I have never played with them. Thoughts?

If the pixel comparison RPi provided script is not going to work for this due to the shadows and missing events, is there a code based solution to use the camera to record motion approaching my door using the camera only? I switched to the wide angle camera that works better.

I don't want any components outside. So recommendations on detecting an Amazon driver coming to drop off a package at my door and recording the whole thing (then stopping once he's gone)?

I'm open to adding sensors or whatever is needed indoors pointed outward to detect the motion but nothing outside. The complexity goes up, I then have to worry about battery power, people stealing my sensor/pico box project box and then sending all that with something like MQTT to the RPI5 to say 'motion detected, record!'

Looking for some feedback!
Cheers
