Advanced users • Remote Access Options For Amending Programs

Hi,

I am looking for a robust method of accessing programs remotely on my Raspberry Pi 4 running Bookworm, from my Macbook. I would also like the best method of keeping on top of versions, rather than having different versions everywhere.

I am developing a hobby robotics project that involves a virtual assistant (think of Holly from Red Dwarf). It plays specific pre recorded lip sync videos based on user input. There is a small screen on the Pi that displays the video, but for code development, I'd like to be able to see the output on my Macbook.

I used to quite happily setup and run netatalk on the Pi, which I believe sets up an SMB share. From my Macbook, I would then transfer files between the two devices without an issue. For amending programs, I would open the program on the Pi using an environment like Atom or VSCode and save directly to the Pi. To keep on top of versions, after ensuring that the program on the Pi worked, I would then upload the new version to my GitHub account.

Now that I am running Bookworm, I can no longer use Netatalk, but have managed to install Samba and setup a Samba share, which will now solve the easy access for amending programs and file sharing, but that does not give me screen sharing.
I have / am trying RPi Connect, but I find it very hit and miss, sometimes I can get it working, sometimes (like just now) I just don't get the 'Connect Via' option on the RPi Connect web page

Any thoughts on solutions?

Many thanks
