I solved the problem by running feh from autostart

While that will work, it is a security issue. Do you trust everyone who will have physical access to the Pi in its final location?

It needs automatic login to the desktop. That means if I can plug in a keyboard (or something that can pretend to be a keyboard) I can easily trash your system or slightly less easily pwn it. The default configuration allows the use of sudo without any security checks (like prompting for the user's password).

I won't provide details but it's one keyboard short cut and one short command.

While it is possible to get feh running unde X without the rest of the desktop and without autologin (see section 5.2.4) given the limited RAM and the single coer CPU of the zeroW it isn't going to perform well.

fbi running without the desktop and without automatic login is likely to perform better and be more secure (even though a bad actior can get to a terminal they won't know your username and password).

Of course, security may not matter for your use case.
