Back in the day, we used to have to get a registered key to be able to play some movies on the raspberry pi. Is this still the case?
Depends on which model Pi you're using. It was never required to be able to play those formats, only if you wanted hardware acceleration for them. A Pi 1 would likely still benefit but current models don't need them (and on the Pi 5 one hardware accelerated codec is disabled because soffware decoding on the CPU runs better than hardware decoding on the GPU).
Even if you are using a Pi 1, I not at all certain it is still possible to purchase keys, plus IIRC the mpeg2 patents that needed to be licensed now don't need to be ask their patents have expired.
