I'm using Volumio at the moment with my new RPi5, it's a wonderful replacement for my old CXN V2.

The other OSes must further refine their compatibility with this new RPi, I would like to do tests later to see what the other distributions are worth.

Volumio is good but not bug-free, and I'm a little disappointed by the type of readings offered. 5.85 € monthly for a single RPi is a lot to pay.

When you think that there are guys like Plex who offer much more for less... 4.99€ monthly, 39€ annually, 110€ for ever.

I need to do some testing to see if there are better options elsewhere...

Well you could always role you own. It's not that hard:
  • RPiOS lite (or Desktop with auto login to the desktop disabled)
  • MPD for local playback or shairportsync (or whatever it has been forked/renamed as) for multiroom synced audio
  • Your choice of MPD client running or your choice of device for control.
  • miniDLNA for smart devices
  • Samba if you want file access to down/up load files.
You'd probably lack some of the fancy bits you'd get with a paid for Volumio or Plex box but you get what you pay for :)
