Raspberry Pi OS • Re: Installing RaspberryPi OS on Debian12

RaspiOS is so nice, that I would prefer it over other alternatives even on a new or powerful computer.
The only problem is that it is a bit outdated. For the time being, only the 32-bit version is available, that was released over two years ago, and is based on Debian 11 (bullseye).

However, the good news is that it is not too difficult to install RaspiOS on top of the latest Debian stable release (which is Debian 12, or bookworm). Here I show how I did it:

Another guide that gets the basics wrong.

This is not "Installing RaspberryPi OS on Debian12". It's installing Debian 12 then installing the Raspberry Pi OS GUI modifications on top of that.

It's also the case that most of the commands in steps 3 and 4 will fail when run as a normal user. apt needs root privileges as does any attempt to change /etc/apt/sources.list or /etc/xdg/autostart/labwc-prompt.desktop
