General discussion • Replacing CarPC with RPI Android Auto headunit

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade my aging CarPC tech and could use some advice from the RPI gurus. I'm simply looking for an interface to get Android Auto from my phone onto my OEM screen. I don't want or need any other functionality, i.e. some sort of infotainment system when that works when I don't have my phone.

Due to my previous setup, I already have it so my car can accept VGA input and 3.5mm audio. So far as outputting controls back, I have a USB capacitive touchscreen controller overlay, a GROM USB unit that allows me to skip tracks or go back from steering wheel controls (that's all the buttons I have, along with volume control, which doesn't need to interface with the pi), and a USB OBDII reader for vehicle stats, codes etc.

The CarPC uses an M2-ATX power supply that powers the PC on when ACC is turned on, and gracefully shuts down at a delayed interval when ACC is off.

I'm trying to determine how much of this I can repurpose and what is the most straightforward OS to install given that I don't particularly require anything outside of a dumb interface that just broadcasts my phone's Android Auto and relays input controls back, similar to contemporary cars that have android auto capability.

It feels like Crankshaft and OpenAuto are geared more towards standalone solutions and I'm having difficulty narrowing my search down to what I'm specifically after.

I'll appreciate any/all input!
