Troubleshooting • "Processing triggers for initramfs-tools" part of apt update taking very long time

When doing sudo apt upgrade everything seems to proceed normally until it gets to this part, which seems to take an eternity:

This happens on several different Raspberry Pi models, from original Pi's up through Pi 5's all of which are running Bookworm, and we have NO Raspberry Pis that have not been affected by this, so it can't be a hardware or SD card issue (unless you think a whole bunch of different model Pis can develop the same hardware fault simultaneously). This was never a problem until relatively recently but it's definitely a problem now. Also other Linux machines (NOT Raspberry Pis) running Debian Bookworm do not seem to have this issue. When a Linux update takes longer than a MacOS update on an older Intel-based Mac, something is seriously wrong.
