I would be interested to know what channel your Pi connects to your Android on. my Pi is within 3 feet of my phone, but that isn't the issue here. My issue is specifically that my phone is "broadcasting" the hotspot on channel 161, which I believe is not a legal channel in the UK and the Pi doesn't even scan that frequency so my Pi only connects at 2.4GHz (successfully). I am struggling to get my Pi to scan channels that high and setting the wifi location through raspi-config to (for instance, CN, US, CA), or by using still doesn't let it scan those higher channels. In fact it seems to revert back to GB when it does connect at 2.4GHz.
