Beginners • Re: Is there a simple and foolproof way to upgrade the OS?

All the Pies communicate with external devices such as USB webcams, Bluetooth temp/humidity sensors, a couple of UPS, etc. It seems that in order to test the new SD card I would also have to obtain new peripherals to use for testing purposes and to make sure that I have copied all files and configurations properly.

Please tell me that there is a simpler and reliable way to do this upgrade.

(Or, I can just continue running Buster which seems to be working fine for me.)
Buster does not get any security updates anymore.
In general Debian can be upgraded fairly easy, remote via ssh as well. But RPL modified it and the key modifications are like hacks, un-managed. config.txt and cmdline.txt are the most famous.
From Buster to Bullseye is do-able but from Bullseye to Bookworm means you need at least to know how the Pi boots (bootloader/firmware/kernels). And read more about config.txt contents. You need to understand every line you use.

Then assuming it is 32-bit now, a Pi3 can run 64-bit, is more future proof. dist-upgrade from 32 to 64 does not work, so it means start from scratch/new install.
