The adapter is capable of handling XC cards. It's not built in, its a USB 3.0 one I bought last year. I even just purchased a 128gb micro sd card for it and it is still giving me the exact same error when I try to write to the card via the pi imager.
In Windows I can format the microsd cards using this adapter and add and remove files to and from it without any issue.
