How about port expanders - is there any instructions how can I communicate via expanders? which one should be optimal?
And AC detector - how to build it?
Using the MCP23017 port expander is pretty easy. There is a Python module for example, which allows you to read and write pins on a connected chip.

But, you don't know if you need one. You also have no reference, so you don't know if something is already optimal.

The safest ac detector is probably a plug-in usb power supply driving an optoisolator, with the output of the optoisolator driving a GPIO. But, if you have the skills you can wire in an ac-driven optoisolator. The important thing is safety.
