When opening up the shell via Alt-F2, the config.txt and cmdline.txt are mounted to /mnt
(I use vi - bit old fashioned like that!)
I also note that when the instructions say "add a line to", they mean "insert into the existing line".
Once I got that worked out, I was up and running. Thanks for your help.
