Troubleshooting • Cannot get HDMI output working with new install

So I have a raspberry Pi 4 here, with an SD card that I carried from an Pi 2, from stretch to buster to bookworm. Because everything got messy and upgrading the system is not supported anyway, I decided to flash a new card with the latest OS.

However, now I cannot with HDMI with X to work - it worked fine with the old installation. When the Pi boots with the lite OS (64bit), I can see the rainbow and then the kernel output for about 3 seconds; after that, the display goes dark. When I start X over SSH, it complains:

Code:

[ 14.753] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 has no monitor section[ 14.753] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-2 has no monitor section[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): EDID for output HDMI-1[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): EDID for output HDMI-2[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 disconnected[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-2 disconnected[ 14.776] (WW) modeset(0): No outputs definitely connected, trying again...[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-1 disconnected[ 14.776] (II) modeset(0): Output HDMI-2 disconnected[ 14.776] (WW) modeset(0): Unable to find connected outputs - setting 1024x768 initial framebuffer
So I tried the desktop OS; and with that, I only see the rainbow, but then no HDMI output whatsoever.

Then I tried hdmi_hotplug=1 (which is apparently a legacy option now), but that makes no difference - and I did not really expect that, because HDMI is basically working, as the kernel output is displayed. But it feels like something is loading during boot that borks HDMI.

Any ideas?
