Thank you for your suggestions. Just to check I did the right thing with the fork. I downloaded the 3 week old rpi-clone file chmoded it and executed.
What was strange is it did not dismount cleanly and got stuck. I couldn't even do a control-c. So I ssh-ed in and did a shutdown. Then the clone failed - no firmware found as before. As I then did the SD Copier the file structure has been overwritten. I will try tomorrow to repeat the cloning and then do a diagnosis.
I take it from your response that the already cloned USB stick will now update using rpi-clone (either version). I could do a couple of rsyncs instead but I like the rpi-clone output which being unattended is written to file and emailed to me so I know things appear to have gone well.
