Sounds like your GPS runs on 4800 baud by default.pi@rpi:~ $ lsusb

minicom with 9600 baud displays gibberish output and with 4800 the output is just like the one from gpsmon.
Have you moved it to outside with a clear view to the sky? I took an old GPS yesterday; took around 10 to 12 min for having the first 3D fix.
