I have seen quite a few “internet enable old radio” projects where people do this so assumed it would be ok. Obviously I won’t do it again!

the forum won’t let me post an image but the output is 5v at 2.4a

I would leave it to the cat but he keeps licking the pi and I know I’m not supposed to get it wet
It should have been ok.

Did you have anything else sitting on the bench that might have been conductive? A piece of wire, a paperclip, a staple?

Without seeing exactly what you have or exactly what you did it's very hard to know what caused the problem, however, as you yourself noted, you seem to be damaging Pis at an alarming rate. You need to be more careful and probably more methodical in your approach.
