yes, if your looking at it in gnome disk before first boot, you should see 4 partitions, the first & last being free.
after first boot you should only see 3 partitions because it expands to fill the drive. the free left is like a buffer
there are many size drives, with very large storage it may not fully expand, so the option is there just in case.
make sure you setup your sound on the volume icon in the panel & apps should use that setting.
