minicom is part of 'the swiss army knife suite' of programs which are needed/useful for analyzing connection problems.

start in a terminal 'minicom -C /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 115200' and type 'hello'. This is sent to the serial device and minicom prints out what is coming back.
For your grbl problem, possibly instead of 'hello' the '$''-command + enter or '$$' +enter would be useful.
