I am mostly just curious as to what I could do with a Pi 5 if I can't lay my hands on a 5V @ 3A supply. What do you have in mind? What do you want to do with it?I would also like to know what a Pi 5 is capable of with less than a 3A supply but don't have a Pi 5 to test with.
If you let me know; I'll try it for you. I have a Pi5 and an assortment of power supplies.
I don't have anything specific, but signage and 'mostly idle' applications comes to mind. Knowing what it can do with lower current supplies would identify what it would be suitable for.
Currently 'use an older Pi with lower power requirements' would be the usual solution for low power draw requirements but those won't be around forever, won't be so easily obtainable, so it would be nice to know which tasks can be supported by a Pi 5 and future models.
If Raspberry Pi and other manufacturers keep moving towards 'bigger and better' with higher power demands, there's a concern that those wanting lower power consumption may be back where they were before the original Pi appeared. Not for a few years yet but it's always good to know where things currently stand. It's usually easier to get that information early on, while widely being used, before something else replaces it.
